CoBupH
CoBupH (Co-Buff) is a colloidal pH buffer containing a very fine grain magnesium hydroxide. Microorganisms responsible for complete reductive dechlorination are sensitive to low pH conditions in the aquifer, if the groundwater pH is below 6.0 bioremediation is no longer effective. Aquifers can be naturally acidic due to local geochemistry and/or the presence of an acid co-contaminant. During the reductive dechlorination process and fermentation of carbon substrates organic acids are produced. If the alkalinity of the groundwater is less than 300 mg/L (as calcium carbonate) the pH will decrease and adversely impact bioremediation. The addition of an alkaline buffer along with the carbon substrate is a viable method to help prevent or adjust the aquifer’s pH. CoBupH is a long-lasting and powerful buffer designed to adjust aquifer pH to increase bioactivity during bioremediation and can be used for metals immobilization.
